Óskarsson Is Absolutely Cooking Right Now — But Real Sociedad Let It Slip

Orri Óskarsson scored twice off the bench against Oviedo, but Real Sociedad were denied a win by a late equaliser. The Icelandic striker is red hot again.

Real Sociedad’s Icelandic striker is doing something quite special in front of goal right now — shame his side couldn’t hold on to make it count.

Came Off the Bench, Ran the Show

With Real Sociedad two goals down and looking well out of it, Pellegrino Matarazzo turned to Orri Óskarsson just after the hour mark. What followed was a proper one-man turnaround:

  • 64 mins: Óskarsson heads home from a Sergio Gómez cross to make it 1-2
  • 87 mins: Caleta-Car pulls it level at 2-2
  • 89 mins: Óskarsson races clear on the counter and slots past the Oviedo keeper — 3-2
  • 90+mins: Bailly equalises. Game ends 3-3. Gutting.

The lad had done everything right, only to see the points nicked away in stoppage time. You could understand if he was a bit narked walking off the Anoeta pitch.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Here’s the thing that makes this even more impressive — Óskarsson has barely played. His four goals in the last five matches have come in just 136 minutes of football total. Break it down:

  • 1 goal in 23 minutes vs Deportivo Alavés (away)
  • 1 goal in 13 minutes vs Elche
  • 23 minutes at San Mamés
  • 31 minutes at the Bernabéu
  • 2 goals in 46 minutes vs Oviedo

That is an absolutely ridiculous return for someone who’s spent the bulk of the season on the treatment table after two separate muscle injuries.

A Winter Warmer, Literally

What’s particularly interesting is that this isn’t the first time Óskarsson has hit top form in the depths of winter. Last season — his first in San Sebastián — he also caught fire in late January and into February, netting four of his seven league goals during that exact same window.

Whether it’s the cold air, something in his preparation, or just one of those patterns that footballers fall into, the geezer clearly loves a January-February run. With the weather in 2026 apparently being especially grim, maybe the harsher the winter, the sharper the striker.

What It Means for Matarazzo

For a manager still finding his feet at Real Sociedad, having a player this clinical available from the bench is a proper luxury. Óskarsson gives him a genuine game-changer option — someone who can come on, read the game quickly, and punish teams when they’re tired. The challenge now is keeping him fit and in this sort of nick for the run-in.

If he can stay available and keep this up, Real Sociedad have got something well tasty on their hands.
