Barça's Jofre Torrents faces three months out with ankle syndesmosis injury
Barcelona's promising 19-year-old left-back Jofre Torrents is set for 10-12 weeks on the sidelines after suffering a left ankle syndesmosis injury.
Barcelona’s bright young left-back Jofre Torrents has been dealt a proper blow, with the 19-year-old facing up to three months out after picking up a serious ankle injury at the weekend.
What happened?
Torrents got hurt during Barça Atlètic’s Segunda Federación clash against Alcoyano on Sunday, and the medical tests he underwent on Monday confirmed the worst — a syndesmosis injury to his left ankle. That’s the ligament complex that holds the lower leg bones together, and it’s not a quick fix. The club have put a timeline of 10 to 12 weeks on his recovery, which means, best case scenario, he’s back just in time for the final few games of the season. Gutting, really.
A season that was really taking off
The timing is especially harsh because this campaign has been a proper breakthrough year for the lad from La Selva del Camp. Here’s where things stood before the injury:
- Barça Atlètic: 15 appearances in Segunda Federación, chipping in with a goal and an assist
- First team: Four appearances under Hansi Flick — three in La Liga (Mallorca, Valencia, Betis) and one in the Copa del Rey against Guadalajara, where he actually started
- He’s also been representing Spain at Under-19 level
That Copa del Rey start in particular showed Flick was willing to trust him, which at 19 is a massive sign of confidence from a manager of that calibre.
Why Barça will be sweating on this one
It’s not just Barça Atlètic who lose out here — Flick’s senior squad will feel the absence too. The German gaffer had clearly earmarked Torrents as a player with genuine first-team potential, not just a future prospect to be filed away for later. At a club that’s always juggling squad depth with financial realities, losing a versatile, developing left-back option is a bit of a headache.
The hope is that the 10-to-12-week window holds firm and he doesn’t suffer any setbacks, because if the recovery stretches beyond that, his season is effectively done. Right now, Barça and the player will just be keeping their fingers crossed that the rehabilitation goes smoothly.
Still young enough that this won’t define him, but it’s a sore one — no pun intended.
