Barcelona's Open Secret: Everyone at the Club Wants Julián Álvarez

Barça's favourite striker target is no longer a mystery — Julián Álvarez has the backing of Laporta, the coaching staff and the dressing room. But it won't be easy.

Barcelona have a dream signing in mind, and it turns out it’s not exactly a well-kept secret anymore — the whole club is apparently mad for Julián Álvarez.

The Name on Everyone’s Lips

According to journalist Rulo Fuentes, speaking on Radio MARCA’s El Futbolín, the Argentine is the undisputed number one target at the Camp Nou. We’re not just talking about the board here — the president, the sporting directors, the coaching staff and the players in the dressing room are all said to be well up for it. That kind of unanimous enthusiasm across a football club is genuinely rare, and it tells you something.

The broad consensus is that Álvarez fits the profile Barça are after perfectly — mobile, clinical, with a serious winning mentality and top-level experience. He’s the sort of forward who’d slot right into Flick’s system.

But — and it’s a big but — Fuentes was quick to pump the brakes on the excitement, noting that several stars would need to align for the deal to actually happen:

  • Barça would need to comply with LaLiga’s financial fair play rules
  • Atlético de Madrid would need to be willing to sell
  • Álvarez himself would need to fancy the move

That’s quite the to-do list.

Does Barça Even Need a New Nine?

Not everyone on the programme was convinced the forward line is even the priority right now. Sergio Torres made the fair point that Barça have grown enormously as a collective attacking unit this season — Fermín’s recent goal was apparently the team’s eleventh from outside the box, something you’d barely have seen under Xavi. Javier Nácher backed that up, pointing out that the squad has so many goal threats that they don’t really depend on one big star up front.

  • If Dani Olmo’s out, Fermín steps up
  • Even Eric García is chipping in with goals and assists
  • The whole team is essentially a goal-scoring machine

Fair enough, really.

The Defence Is the Real Problem

Kerman de Frutos cut through the noise with perhaps the most sensible take — why are we even having a negative debate when Barça are back top of the table and scoring three goals a game? His argument: the real issue isn’t up front, it’s at the back. Barça are conceding too much, and that defensive imbalance is what should be keeping Flick up at night, not the striker situation.

It’s a valid shout. You can have all the goals in the world, but if you’re leaking them at the other end, you’re going to come unstuck in the big moments.

Dream Move, Complicated Reality

So where does that leave the Álvarez saga? Pretty much where most Barça transfer stories end up — full of genuine desire, short on easy solutions. The financial gymnastics required to pull off a deal of this magnitude are considerable, and Atlético aren’t exactly going to let their marquee signing walk out the door on the cheap.

The will is clearly there across the entire club. But as Fuentes put it, the planets still need to align — and right now, they’re not quite in position.

For the time being, Barça crack on with their title challenge, scoring for fun and hoping the defence holds firm. The Álvarez dream is very much alive. Just don’t go booking the unveiling just yet.
