Iago Aspas Reaches 100 La Liga Goals at Balaídos — And He's Still Going

Iago Aspas scored his 100th La Liga goal at Balaídos against Mallorca, a milestone no Celta player has ever reached in the club's 103-year history.

Iago Aspas has done it again — the Galician legend notched his 100th top-flight goal at Balaídos on Sunday against Mallorca, becoming the first player in Celta Vigo’s 103-year history to reach that mark at their own ground.

The milestone in numbers

Look, the raw stats here are genuinely ridiculous for a bloke who’s spent the bulk of his career at a mid-table side rather than one of the giants:

  • 201 La Liga goals for Celta across all divisions
  • 167 of those in the top flight
  • 12 Copa del Rey goals
  • 8 in the Europa League
  • 221 total goals for the first team

And crucially, that century of league goals at Balaídos is a record that belongs to him and him alone. Nobody else in the club’s entire history has got there. Not even close, apparently.

What a week to do it

The timing couldn’t have been better either. Aspas had already grabbed a goal in Thessaloniki midweek in Europe, then turned up against Mallorca and bagged a brace — his first double in two years — plus an assist. All told, he’s now on seven goals and six assists for the season. At 37 (or however old the fella is now), that’s not a bad little return.

It’s the sort of week that reminds you why Celta fans absolutely worship this man. He’s not just a goalscorer — he’s the Celta player, full stop.

The elephant in the room: will he stay?

Here’s where it gets a bit tense, though. His contract situation is unresolved, and Aspas is giving absolutely nothing away about whether he’ll sign on for another season. The club wants him to stay, the coaching staff want him to stay, his teammates want him to stay — basically everyone at Celta is desperate for him to put pen to paper.

But the decision is entirely his, and he knows it. Weeks like this one obviously make it harder for him to walk away, but he’s earned the right to take his time. You can’t really argue with that when the geezer’s just become the greatest goalscorer in your club’s history at your own ground.

For now, Celta fans will just have to enjoy the ride and hope he’s not done yet.
