Odriozola opens up after ACL heartbreak: 'Only then can you prove you're invincible'

Álvaro Odriozola suffered a cruel ACL injury on his 100th appearance, just as he was rediscovering his best form. Here's what the Real Sociedad full-back had to say.

Football can be an absolute gut punch sometimes, and Álvaro Odriozola knows that better than most right now — the Real Sociedad right-back has opened up after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament at the worst possible moment.

The timing couldn’t be crueller

If you were writing a script designed to break a footballer’s heart, you’d probably land on something like this:

  • His 100th career appearance — a proper milestone
  • In front of his family and his home supporters
  • Just as he was genuinely enjoying his football again, after what’s been a difficult few years

The injury happened on Saturday against Oviedo, and after the medical tests confirmed everyone’s fears the following day, Odriozola took to social media to address it head-on. You’ve got to respect the bloke for that.

What he actually said

Odriozola was raw and honest about it, describing the moment life decided to give him a proper wallop. He spoke about being in his best form, finally feeling the hard work paying off, and doing it all in front of the people who matter most — and then the floor falling out from underneath him.

But here’s the thing — he didn’t wallow. He answered his own question almost immediately, saying that ‘only then can you prove you are invincible.’ Bit of a shivers-down-the-spine moment, that.

The road ahead

Odriozola is now waiting on a surgery date before he can begin his rehabilitation. ACL recoveries are notoriously long — we’re typically talking the best part of a year — so it’s a serious blow, both for the player and for Real Sociedad.

  • The San Sebastián side will need to find cover at right-back
  • Odriozola himself faces months of graft before he’s back on the pitch
  • At 29, this is obviously a significant setback, but not a career-ender by any stretch

A player who deserved better

Odriozola’s career has had its fair share of twists — spells at Real Madrid, loan moves, injury disruption — and just when it looked like he’d found a proper home at Real Sociedad and was hitting his stride again, this happens. Proper bad luck, that. The sort that makes you want to have a little word with the football gods.

Still, if his response is anything to go by, he’s not the type to feel sorry for himself for long. Real Sociedad fans will be hoping he’s back and flying come next season.
