Real Sociedad Tie Down Homegrown Keeper Unai Marrero Until 2030

Real Sociedad have extended goalkeeper Unai Marrero's contract until 2030, securing a rare and exciting academy product between the sticks at the top level.

Real Sociedad have handed a new long-term deal to young goalkeeper Unai Marrero, extending his stay at the club until 2030 — and honestly, it feels like a proper bit of smart business from the Basque club.

The Deal Itself

Marrero had been contracted until 2027, but the Txuri-urdin have added three more years onto that, tying the Azpeitia-born stopper down for the foreseeable. It’s the kind of extension that sends a clear message: this lad is very much part of the long-term plan.

What makes it even more significant is the context. There had been whispers of a potential departure after Marrero switched representation agencies — you know how those things tend to go — so getting this sorted will be a relief for the club and the fanbase alike.

Why He Matters

On paper, the numbers are modest — just four Primera División appearances and 17 in total across all competitions including the Copa del Rey and Europa League. But context is everything here:

  • Marrero made his Real debut in the Copa del Rey on 1 November 2023, away at Buñol
  • His LaLiga bow came on 2 January 2024 against Deportivo Alavés at Anoeta, filling in after Álex Remiro was sent off
  • He’s been the go-to keeper in cup football and has looked increasingly assured every time he’s played

Perhaps most impressively, he’s the first Real Sociedad academy goalkeeper to perform at this level in the top flight for 20 years. That’s a genuinely big deal for a club that prides itself on its cantera.

Copa Hero — Then Crocked

The highlight of his season so far? Saving two penalties in the Copa del Rey shootout to send Real through to the quarter-finals. Brilliant stuff from the kid.

Then came the rotten luck. On 29 January, the day before Real’s Copa semi-final first leg at San Mamés, Marrero suffered a fractured cheekbone in training. He missed the trip to Athletic completely, which was a real blow given he’d been the designated cup keeper all season.

The good news is he’s back in the squad now — albeit wearing a mask — under head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo. Which brings us to the interesting question…

Will He Play the Second Leg?

With the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg coming up at Anoeta, there’s a genuine selection dilemma. Marrero was the cup keeper before the injury, but Matarazzo brought someone else in during his absence. Does the manager hand Marrero straight back in, or stick with the lad from Cascante who’s kept things ticking over?

It’s a nice headache to have, frankly. Meanwhile, the longer-term picture around the goalkeeping situation at Real Sociedad is also worth watching — Remiro remains the undisputed number one for now, but his own future is still up in the air.

Either way, locking Marrero down until 2030 is a result. Sorted.
