Sevilla's Three-Game Unbeaten Run Has Them Daring to Dream Ahead of the Seville Derby

Sevilla picked up a crucial win at Getafe to string together three unbeaten games for only the second time this season. Here's why it matters.

A hard-fought win at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez has given Sevilla a rare bit of breathing room in their relegation battle — and, more importantly, some proper momentum heading into the Seville derby.

The Run That’s Got Nervión Daring to Believe

It doesn’t sound like much on paper, but three consecutive games without a loss is actually a big deal for this Sevilla side. It’s only the second time all season they’ve managed it — and the fact they’ve done it right before a derby makes it feel a whole lot more significant.

The sequence:

  • Draw vs Girona (at home)
  • Draw vs Alavés (at home)
  • Win at Getafe — courtesy of a Sow goal

Both Girona and Alavés are direct rivals in the scrap to stay up, so those points weren’t just nice to have — they were absolutely essential.

The Second Half Turnaround

Almeyda’s lot have actually been decent since the winter restart, all things considered. In the second half of the season so far, they’ve only lost once — that 4-1 hammering at Mallorca — and have picked up nine points from a possible 18. Not exactly setting La Liga alight, but for a side that spent most of the first half of the campaign looking absolutely lost, it’s a marked improvement.

Interestingly, the first time they strung three unbeaten games together this season came against almost identical opposition — Girona, Elche, and Alavés back near the start of the campaign. History repeating itself, in the best possible way.

The Defensive Shift That’s Flying Under the Radar

Here’s the bit that might be the most encouraging sign of all:

  • Since the Mallorca nightmare, Sevilla have conceded just two goals in three games
  • Against Getafe, Greek keeper Odysseas kept a clean sheet — his first since a win over Oviedo back in December
  • Getafe managed only four shots on target all game

For a side that had been leaking goals like a dodgy radiator, that defensive solidity is well overdue.

What It Means Going Into the Derby

With five points now separating them from the relegation zone — and it’d be just two without those hard-earned draws — Sevilla head into the Seville derby at La Cartuja with something they haven’t had much of this season: genuine confidence. It’s the second and final derby of the campaign, and right now, form and momentum are very much on their side.

The job’s far from done, but for the first time in a while, Sevilla fans can actually enjoy the build-up to a big match rather than dreading it. That’s not nothing.
