Huesca lose new signing Joaquín Fernández for a month with hamstring injury
SD Huesca's winter signing Joaquín Fernández is set to miss around a month of action after picking up a distal biceps femoris injury on his debut.
Huesca’s January window is already having a nightmare start — one of their new faces is heading straight back to the treatment room after just 15 minutes of competitive football.
What happened?
Joaquín Fernández, one of Huesca’s winter signings, has been ruled out for roughly a month after picking up a muscular injury to the distal portion of the biceps femoris in his right thigh — basically, a hamstring problem, and not a minor one.
The centre-back made his debut last weekend against Mirandés, starting in the XI for the first time and looking like he might finally start building some match sharpness. That lasted all of a quarter of an hour. He felt something go during a passage of play and had to come straight off — no hanging about.
Why it stings
Timing-wise, this is a proper kick in the teeth for Joaquín:
- He’d only just broken into the starting side
- He was beginning to find his feet and get some competitive minutes under his belt
- Now he’s looking at a return date somewhere around the end of March
- When he does come back, it’ll basically be like starting from scratch all over again
For a player who came in during January specifically to make an impact in the second half of the season, losing four-plus weeks is a serious blow to his momentum — and to Huesca’s defensive options.
Bolo’s selection headache
Manager Jon Pérez Bolo now has to figure out who fills the gap. There are a couple of routes he could go:
- Carrillo, who played at left-back in that game, could shift back into a centre-back partnership alongside Pulido
- Íñigo Piña is the other name in the frame as an alternative option
Neither is an obvious like-for-like, and Bolo doesn’t have much margin for error right now. The next fixture against Valladolid carries serious weight — this is a game where more than just three points are on the line in terms of where Huesca sit in the Segunda División table.
Getting the defensive setup right without Joaquín is going to be one of the key calls of the week. Bolo needs to get his selections spot on — no room for a dodgy back four in a game that big.
