Ceuta vs Córdoba: Segunda División Catch-Up Fixture Could Shake Up the Playoff Race
Ceuta host Córdoba in a rescheduled Segunda División clash that could have big playoff implications for both sides. Here's what you need to know.
A rescheduled fixture that’s been sitting on the calendar since early February finally gets played on Wednesday evening — and it’s a proper six-pointer with playoff places very much on the line.
Why This Game Got Pushed Back
This was originally Matchday 25, but a storm back on 8 February made it impossible for Córdoba to travel to Ceuta, so here we are. These things happen in the lower reaches of the Spanish football pyramid, and at least the wait has given the match a bit more weight — both clubs are now acutely aware of exactly what’s at stake.
What’s on the Line
- Ceuta go into this one a single point outside the playoff spots. Win, and they’re right in the mix.
- Córdoba can actually leapfrog into the playoff zone with three points — a much more direct incentive for Iván Ania’s side.
So yeah, both sets of fans will be glued to this one. Proper squeaky bum territory.
Ceuta’s Injury Headaches
Ceuta boss José Juan Romero has a few selection headaches to deal with at the Alfonso Murube:
- Carlos Hernández is suspended — he’ll miss his first league minutes of the season.
- Anuar, Campaña and Marc Domènech (who got on the scoresheet last time out) are all unavailable.
- On the bright side, winger Konrad returns, as does Marcos Fernández — the club’s top scorer — who is back after serving his own ban.
Losing your leading goalscorer and then getting him back for a game this big is a bit of alright, to be fair.
Córdoba’s Concerns
The Andalusians rocked up to this fixture off the back of a defeat at Almería — a result that, by all accounts, was a fair one. They were well below their best, particularly in the first half.
Ania isn’t expected to make wholesale changes, though he does welcome Rubén Alves back from injury. The bad news is that Trilli and Juan María Alcedo both picked up knocks before that Almería game, so the squad is still a bit stretched.
There’s also an interesting subplot here: Ania will be coming up against José Juan Romero, the manager he has faced more times than any other in his coaching career. A little personal duel within the main event.
The Bigger Picture
Seconda División — or LaLiga Hypermotion as it’s officially branded — is absolutely bunched up in that mid-table-to-playoff corridor right now, and games in hand can be decisive. This midweek catch-up fixture is exactly the sort of thing that separates the sides who genuinely fancy a crack at promotion from those just making up the numbers.
Ceuta at home, playoff hunger, and a Córdoba side that needs a response after Almería. Should be a decent watch.
