High Stakes at the Bernabéu: Real Madrid vs Benfica – Last-16 Place on the Line

Real Madrid host Benfica in a tense Champions League play-off second leg, with Mbappé doubtful, Mourinho banned, and Prestianni suspended after a racism incident.

Real Madrid face a genuine banana skin on Wednesday night as Benfica come to the Bernabéu for the second leg of their Champions League play-off tie — and after the week Los Blancos have had, this one feels properly loaded.

The First Leg: Job Half Done, But Not Finished

Madrid came away from Lisbon with a 0-1 win thanks to a Vinicius Jr goal, and by most accounts they were the better side by some distance. The scoreline, though, keeps the tie alive — and that’s partly down to the chaos that unfolded in the first leg.

  • Argentine winger Prestianni was involved in an incident with Vinicius that led the referee to activate the anti-racism protocol
  • That disruption arguably hurt Madrid more than Benfica on the night
  • Madrid had chances to put the tie to bed but couldn’t take them — so here we are

UEFA have since handed Prestianni a provisional ban, meaning he won’t feature at the Bernabéu. It’s a slightly eyebrow-raising call, though there is precedent — a similar one-match ban was handed to Kudela back in 2021 in a Rangers vs Slavia Europa League tie, which eventually became a ten-game suspension.

Pamplona Hangover

If the first leg left things a bit nervy, last Saturday made things properly uncomfortable. Madrid went to Osasuna and got done — a result that cost them top spot in La Liga. It was one of their worst performances of the season by all accounts, with the referee’s decisions also going against them throughout: a Courtois penalty concession, a Mbappé goal ruled out, and a Raúl García goal that sealed the defeat.

The timing couldn’t be worse. Another slip-up — this time in the Champions League — would drag Madrid back into a full-blown sporting crisis that, if we’re honest, they’ve never fully shaken off this season.

Mourinho: The Subplot That Won’t Happen

There was a proper bit of romance on the cards here. José Mourinho — Benfica’s manager and, of course, former Real Madrid boss — was set to return to the Bernabéu for the first time since leaving in 2013. The crowd would’ve gone mental, one way or another.

But Mou got himself sent off in the first leg, so he’s banned from the touchline and won’t get his big homecoming moment. Prestianni, interestingly, did travel with the Benfica squad despite his suspension — so expect the atmosphere to be a bit spicy regardless.

What Madrid Need

A few key points heading into Wednesday:

  • Mbappé is almost certainly out, which is a big blow going forward
  • Vinicius is the man everyone’s watching — he’ll be fired up, you’d imagine
  • Madrid need a roaring Bernabéu behind them to get through what is, on paper, a very manageable tie — but one that’s become anything but straightforward

Get through this and Madrid are in the last 16. Bottle it, and the knives will be out. Simple as that.
