Madrid's Champions Trap, Mbappé Chaos and a Refereeing Crisis: The Warning Signs Piling Up

Roberto Gómez raised serious concerns about Real Madrid's Champions League tie, Mbappé's availability, and a refereeing scandal engulfing Spanish football.

Roberto Gómez isn’t buying the relaxed mood around Real Madrid ahead of their Champions League second leg — and his warnings on La Tribu make for uncomfortable listening if you’re a Madridista.

Don’t Get Comfortable, Madrid

Yes, Real Madrid head into the second leg with a one-goal advantage. But Gómez was having none of the triumphalism doing the rounds. He called it a “dangerous game, a trap game” — one that’s “more complicated than people are saying.” And honestly? He’s got a point. One-goal leads have a habit of evaporating in Europe, and Benfica aren’t exactly a pub side.

Gómez was keen to stress the Portuguese club’s competitive character — a team with serious pride and a rich European pedigree. This isn’t the kind of tie you can sleepwalk through, regardless of what the first leg scoreline suggests.

The Mbappé Headache

One of the more telling moments in the conversation was when Gómez turned his attention to Kylian Mbappé — and the growing frustration around the Frenchman’s stop-start involvement. The sentiment he captured is something a lot of fans will recognise: is he playing, isn’t he playing, will someone just give us a straight answer?

It’s become a bit of a soap opera, and that kind of uncertainty is the last thing you want buzzing around the camp before a crunch European night.

Courtois: The One Bright Spark

On the flip side, Gómez was full of praise for Thibaut Courtois, who he reckoned was absolutely top drawer in the first leg. When Madrid need him most, the Belgian keeps delivering — and that’s no small thing given the pressure swirling around the squad right now.

Mourinho’s Reputation Among Madridistas

Gómez also took a moment to weigh in on José Mourinho, suggesting the former Madrid boss has well and truly shown his true colours to the fanbase. Make of that what you will, but it’s clear Gómez feels the verdict is in.

The Refereeing Row: Proper Scandal Stuff

If the Madrid chat was spicy, the refereeing section was something else entirely. Gómez went full heat, calling the state of Spanish officiating a flat-out disgrace — and naming names while he was at it:

  • Louzán — culpable
  • Soto — culpable
  • Tebas — culpable
  • The entire refereeing establishment — culpable

He pointed to Rayo Vallecano as one example of a club being done dirty by poor decisions, and argued the rot runs through practically the whole of Spanish football — affecting European spots, promotion battles, relegation scraps, the lot. He reckons there are eight to ten dodgy calls every single matchday.

Perhaps most strikingly, he floated the idea of a strike against the referees — leaving it on the table as a genuine option worth debating. Whether that ever gains traction is another matter, but the fact it’s even being discussed tells you how fed up people are getting.

This is a conversation that’s going to rumble on well beyond one radio show.
