Mbappé ruled out against Benfica as Real Madrid decide to fix knee problem once and for all
Kylian Mbappé has been left out of Real Madrid's squad for the Champions League play-off second leg vs Benfica as his knee issues drag on.
Kylian Mbappé is out of Real Madrid’s squad for Tuesday’s Champions League play-off second leg against Benfica — and this time, the club are determined to actually sort the problem out properly.
What’s going on with the knee?
Mbappé has been in and out of the squad since early December with a niggling left knee issue, and frankly the whole saga has been a bit of a mess. According to MARCA, the decision has now been taken to stop completely and get the knee fully right, with the target being to have him back at 100% for the next round of the Champions League — if Madrid get through, of course — in the second week of March.
The report also suggests Mbappé himself isn’t entirely happy with how his discomfort has been managed, which tells its own story.
A timeline that doesn’t exactly fill you with confidence
Here’s how it’s unfolded since December:
- 7 Dec – Mbappé limps off at half-time, comes back out but is clearly struggling. Madrid lose 2-0.
- 10 Dec – Named in the squad for the Man City game but doesn’t play a single minute.
- 17 Dec – Plays the full 90 against Talavera in the Copa del Rey, reportedly chasing Cristiano’s annual goals record.
- 31 Dec – Madrid announce a knee injury. French sources say three to four weeks out.
- 11 Jan – Ten days later, he’s somehow back for the Supercopa final against Barça. Make that make sense.
- 14 Jan – Left out against Albacete, more for rest than injury. Then rattles in nine goals in six games.
- 14 Feb – Benched for the full match against Real Sociedad as the knee flares up again. Comes back three days later against Benfica.
- 25 Feb – Left out entirely. Full stop. Enough is enough.
What it means for Madrid
This is a proper headache for Raúl Arbeloa. Losing Mbappé — who’s contributed 38 goals this season — for a Champions League knockout tie is a big deal, even if Vinicius Jr. is in the form of his life right now.
The squad list for the Benfica game is thin up top, to put it mildly:
- Goalkeepers: Courtois, Lunin, Fran González
- Defenders: Carvajal, Alaba, Trent, Asencio, Carreras, Fran García, Rüdiger, Mendy
- Midfielders: Camavinga, Valverde, Tchouaméni, Arda Güler, Cestero, Manuel Ángel, Palacios, Thiago
- Forwards: Vini Jr., Gonzalo, Brahim, Mastantuono
Four academy lads in midfield, and a forward line that — with all due respect — doesn’t exactly strike fear into Benfica’s back four. If Vinicius has an off night, Madrid are going to be scratching around for a plan B.
The bigger picture
The frustrating thing is this knee issue has never really gone away — it’s just been managed, or arguably mismanaged, since December. Mbappé playing 90 minutes against a Copa del Rey side while supposedly injured, then rushing back for a Supercopa final before he was ready — it all adds up. Better to draw a line under it now and get him right for the business end of the season, but Madrid will need to get past Benfica first without their main man.
