Nine Missing, Chelsea Waiting: Real Madrid Juniors Face Massive Injury Crisis in Youth League Last 16
Real Madrid's U19s face Chelsea in the UEFA Youth League last 16 with nine players unavailable — a selection headache of the highest order for Álvaro López.
Real Madrid’s youngsters head into tonight’s UEFA Youth League last-16 tie at the Di Stéfano against a Chelsea side that waltzed through the league phase unbeaten — and they’re doing it with half their best players missing.
The Injury List Is Genuinely Ridiculous
Nine. Nine absentees. That’s the number Álvaro López is dealing with ahead of a knockout tie that could send his side into the quarter-finals. Here’s the full damage:
- Injuries: Joan Martínez and Valdepeñas are both ruled out through fitness issues
- Called up to the first team: Cestero and Thiago Pitarch have been drafted into Arbeloa’s senior squad — a direct consequence of Ceballos and Bellingham going down
- Also out: Javi Navarro, Bailón, Pol Durán, De Almeida and Lacosta
It’s a proper nightmare, and the XI López had in his head last week looks absolutely nothing like what he’ll actually put out this afternoon.
How They’ll Line Up
With the defence needing a reshuffle following Joan Martínez’s absence, Ariel is the likely replacement. There’s also a possibility Lezcano comes in at left-back if Diego Aguado drops into the centre alongside Mario Rivas. Fortea holds down the right side.
In midfield, losing both Cestero and Thiago Pitarch to first-team duty has opened the door for Beto and Roberto Martín to step in alongside the squad’s top scorer, Carlos Díez — the one bit of good news in all this.
Up top, at least López can keep the same front three that did the business against Marseille in the previous round: Yáñez, Ciria and Arnu.
The Opposition Aren’t Mugging About
Chelsea came through the league phase as the outright leaders — five wins and a draw, no defeats. This is not a soft draw. The Blues’ youth setup has been producing top-level talent for years, and they’ll fancy their chances against a Madrid side that’s been forced to cobble together a lineup on the fly.
What’s at Stake
A place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Youth League is genuinely massive for these kids — it’s the kind of stage that gets you noticed. Despite the disruption, Madrid’s attack looks lively enough on paper, and there’s something to be said for a squad that’s had to grind through adversity all week.
Kickoff at the Di Stéfano is at 4pm (CET), live on RMTV. Should be a tasty one.
