Real Madrid's youngsters knock out unbeaten Chelsea to reach Youth League quarter-finals

A deflected Yáñez goal in the 8th minute was enough for Real Madrid's academy side to eliminate an unbeaten Chelsea and book a last-eight spot.

Real Madrid’s under-19s did the business at the Di Stéfano on Tuesday, edging out a previously unbeaten Chelsea side 1-0 to punch their ticket to the UEFA Youth League quarter-finals — and they’ll fancy their chances of going all the way.

One goal, loads of chances, maximum stress

It was a classic Madrid performance in the best and worst sense of the word. Dominant for long stretches, wasteful in front of goal, and somehow making it far more nervy than it needed to be. Sound familiar?

Yáñez — the standout player on the pitch — broke the deadlock inside nine minutes when his effort took a deflection off a Chelsea defender and wrong-footed keeper Bernal. Job done early doors, you’d think. Not quite.

  • Madrid had the better of the first half comfortably, with Ciria and Arnu both going close but failing to add to the tally
  • Chelsea, who’d come into the game unbeaten in the competition, barely got a sniff before the break — though they did grow into it late in the first half via some decent wide play from Antwi and Derry
  • Goalkeeper Illia Voloshyn was largely a spectator in the first period but made a sharp stop just before half-time to keep the lead intact

Second half jitters

Madrid needed a second goal and couldn’t find it. That’s the long and short of it. Chelsea, to their credit, kept believing and pushed hard for an equaliser — which is exactly what you’d expect from a side that had gone unbeaten up to this point.

Illia came to the rescue twice in the second half with genuinely top-drawer saves — a brilliant low stop to deny Mheuka and another to keep out a Derry effort — and those interventions were ultimately the difference between progressing and going out.

Coach Álvaro López made some smart tactical tweaks to help his side manage the game better, and Yáñez kept pressing and probing throughout. Ciria rattled one at Bernal with six minutes to go, only to be denied again, and Jacobo Ortega hit the post in the 90th minute as Madrid went hunting for the goal that would’ve settled everyone’s nerves.

What’s next

It finished 1-0. Tense, a bit ragged at times, but ultimately a professional result against quality opposition. Madrid will now face Sporting CP in the quarter-finals, one step away from the Final Four.
