RFEF Overrule Judge to Confirm Rayo vs Oviedo Will Go Ahead on 4 March
Spain's football federation has backed LaLiga's position, confirming the postponed Rayo Vallecano vs Real Oviedo match will be played on 4 March.
The saga over Rayo Vallecano’s postponed home match against Real Oviedo has finally got a resolution — and it’s LaLiga who’ve come out on top.
What’s been going on?
The matchday 23 fixture between Rayo and Oviedo was suspended after the pitch at Vallecas was deemed unplayable. What followed was a proper administrative back-and-forth, with a judge initially ruling against the game going ahead as planned. LaLiga pushed back, and now the RFEF’s Second Instance Committee has stepped in and sided with the league — overturning the judge’s decision and confirming the match will take place on Wednesday 4 March, as originally scheduled.
So after all that drama, it’s happening. Get it in the diary.
Why does this fixture matter so much?
This isn’t just any rearranged game — both clubs are absolutely scrapping for their lives in the bottom half of the table, which makes it about as high-stakes as it gets without being a cup final.
Rayo Vallecano:
- Currently sitting 15th in the table
- Recent form has been a bit of a mixed bag — a draw against Betis in La Cartuja, but then a brilliant 3-0 win over Atlético at Butarque
- They’re only two points above the relegation zone, with Mallorca currently occupying that final drop spot on 24 points
- Íñigo Pérez’s side simply cannot afford to let this one slip
Real Oviedo:
- Bottom of the league. Stone cold last
- A massive eight points adrift of safety — that’s a proper mountain to climb
- Their last outing ended 3-3 at Anoeta, which at least showed some fight, but a draw doesn’t really cut it when you’re that deep in the mire
- For Almada’s side, this game is essentially must-win if they want to keep any realistic hope of survival alive
The bigger picture
Let’s be honest — Oviedo are in an absolutely dire situation. Eight points from safety with the season ticking away? Even the most optimistic Asturian fan would struggle to put a positive spin on that. But football’s funny, and stranger things have happened in La Liga’s relegation battles.
For Rayo, this is a chance to put some breathing room between themselves and the drop zone. A home win would be massive — they know it, Vallecas knows it, and now that the fixture confusion is finally sorted, they can focus on actually playing the blooming game.
Wednesday 4 March. Both clubs will be desperate. Should be a proper relegation six-pointer.
