Sevilla Close In On Patrik Mercado Deal — But You'll Have to Wait Until After the World Cup
Sevilla have all but sealed a deal for Independiente del Valle midfielder Patrik Mercado, with the move set to be completed after the 2026 World Cup.
Sevilla have quietly done their homework in the transfer market, and it looks like Antonio Cordón has pulled off a bit of a coup — though fans won’t see the fruits of it until after the summer of 2026.
What’s the deal?
Sevilla essentially had a move for Ecuadorian midfielder Patrik Mercado wrapped up during the January window, only for financial constraints and a lack of salary cap space to put the brakes on it. Rather than walk away, the club have agreed to delay the transfer until after the 2026 World Cup, which is being held across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed via X that the paperwork has been exchanged and everything is effectively done — it’s just a case of waiting for the right moment to make it official.
Who is Patrik Mercado?
If you haven’t clocked him yet, get familiar. Mercado plays for Independiente del Valle in Ecuador and is a box-to-box midfielder with a proper eye for goal. Last season he racked up:
- 48 official appearances
- 7 goals
- 11 assists
He’s only 22 and already a full Ecuador international. Crucially, he was also on the radar of several Premier League clubs — Chelsea, Brighton, Bournemouth and Fulham were all said to be interested. Sevilla have nipped in ahead of the lot of them, reportedly agreeing a fee of around €6 million. Bargain, if it comes off.
The small print
It’s not all plain sailing, mind. Before Mercado can actually pull on the red and white stripes, Sevilla need to sort out a couple of things:
- Salary space — they need to shift some wages off the books. Players like Akor Adams, Agoumé, Rubén Vargas, Juanlu, Kike Salas and Carmona are all potential sales targets if the right offer lands.
- Non-EU squad slot — currently taken up by Alexis Sánchez, Suazo and Marcao. Marcao has apparently been working on getting Spanish nationality for a while, and Alexis’s future at the club looks shaky at best, so there could be movement there.
The bigger picture
All of this is happening against the backdrop of a potential takeover at Sevilla. Consultancy firm KPMG — brought in by Five Eleven Capital, the holding group linked to Sergio Ramos — is set to carry out a thorough audit of the club’s finances in the coming months. The final offer, whenever it comes, is likely to hinge on whether Sevilla manage to stay up in La Liga this season.
So there’s a lot of plates spinning at Nervión right now. But quietly, the sporting director is getting on with the job — and landing a 22-year-old international midfielder for six million quid before half of England’s top flight even knew what was happening is a decent day’s work.
