Burgos CF Running on Empty at the Worst Possible Time

Burgos CF are generating chances but can't buy a goal. With two massive fixtures coming up, their playoff push is hanging by a thread.

Burgos CF are doing everything right except the one thing that actually matters — putting the ball in the net. At a stage of the season where every point is gold dust, the goals have completely dried up.

The Drought in Numbers

The stats don’t lie, and right now they make grim reading for the Castilian club:

  • Just one goal in their last three league games (against Las Palmas, Cádiz, and Racing)
  • Four away games on the spin without scoring — Santander, Las Palmas, Málaga, and Córdoba
  • Only six goals across their last nine league outings

The 1-0 defeat at Racing de Santander was the latest chapter in this sorry story. Íñigo Córdoba had a clear one-on-one, David González rattled the post twice, and Víctor Mollejo couldn’t convert when the chance came his way. Lovely stuff to watch in isolation, absolutely maddening in context.

Compare that to the early part of the season, when Burgos were banging in goals all over the shop away from home — wins at Almería, Mirandés, Leganés, Cádiz, and Sporting, twelve goals in five away matches. Feels like a different team right now.

David González Keeping the Lights On

In the middle of all this, David González is basically carrying the attack on his own. Seven goals for the season makes him the club’s top scorer by some distance, and he’s the one bloke who keeps turning up when it counts.

Behind him:

  • Fer Niño – 5 goals
  • Mario González & Mateo Mejía – 3 each
  • Curro Sánchez – 3
  • Íñigo Córdoba – 1
  • Mollejo – yet to open his account

The Cádiz game earlier in the season summed it all up — 21 shots, two posts, and only a draw to show for it. The creativity is clearly there. The clinical edge? Gone walkabout.

The Silver Lining

Here’s the thing though — Burgos haven’t completely lost the plot. Defensively, they’re genuinely one of the best sides in Segunda División. Only 26 goals conceded after 27 games puts them second in the division for defensive solidity, level with Castellón and behind only Las Palmas.

That’s the foundation keeping their season alive. They sit ninth, just two points off sixth place and the playoff spots. Still very much in the mix.

What Comes Next

The next two fixtures could define their entire campaign:

  • Away at Real Zaragoza
  • Home to Mirandés on 7 March at El Plantío

Six points on offer. Win both and the playoff dream is very much on. Drop points from either and the mood around El Plantío could turn pretty quickly.

Burgos are doing the hard work. They’re competing, they’re creating, and they’re keeping it tight at the back. But without goals, none of that matters a great deal. Ramis needs to find the answer sharpish — the season won’t wait.
