Málaga Tie Down Ángel Recio Until 2029 as Cantera Rebuild Continues
Málaga CF extend homegrown centre-back Ángel Recio's contract to 2029, with more academy renewals still in the pipeline as the club shapes its future.
Málaga are quietly doing the business in the background, locking down their best young talent one by one as the club builds for the long term.
Ángel Recio, the Fuengirola-born centre-back, has put pen to paper on a new deal that keeps him at La Rosaleda until 2029. It’s the latest in a string of academy renewals that have also seen Álex Pastor, Carlos Puga and David Larrubia all commit their futures to the club.
More Business Still to Do
It’s not all done and dusted, mind. Sporting director Loren still has a few open files on his desk:
- Chupete – renewal still pending
- Dani Lorenzo – publicly stated his desire to stay and sign on, but nothing official yet
So there’s still work to be done, but the direction of travel is pretty clear — Málaga want to keep their homegrown lads together.
Recio’s Journey to the First Team
Recio’s path this season has been a bit of a rollercoaster, to be fair. He was still technically carrying a filial squad number — the number 37 — but had been operating fully within the first-team setup ahead of the coming campaign.
He gradually forced his way into the picture, particularly after Funes took charge in the dugout. However, about three weeks into the new manager’s tenure, Recio found himself dropping out of the starting XI and losing minutes in the rotation. Football, innit — one minute you’re in, the next you’re watching from the bench.
An Opportunity Knocking
Here’s where it gets interesting for the lad, though. With Einar Galilea confirmed out injured for at least a month, Recio suddenly finds himself with a proper chance to nail down a starting spot. His direct competition for the position is Javi Montero, so it’s a straight shoot-out between the two.
This season he’s made seven appearances for the first team — not a massive haul, but enough to show he belongs at this level.
The Bigger Picture
What Málaga are doing here is genuinely smart. Rather than scrambling to replace players or throwing money around in the market, they’re building a core of locally developed talent who know the club inside out. It’s the kind of project that takes patience, but when it clicks, it really clicks.
Recio’s extension to 2029 is another brick in that wall. Now he just needs to take his chance while Galilea’s on the treatment table and make that new contract look like an absolute bargain.
