Sevilla Confirm Agreement to Sign Ecuadorian Midfielder Patrik Mercado

Sevilla have announced a pre-agreement to sign Independiente del Valle's Patrik Mercado ahead of the 2026-27 season. Here's what you need to know.

Sevilla have made it official — they’re bringing in Ecuadorian midfielder Patrik Mercado from Independiente del Valle, though you’ll have to wait until the summer to actually see him in an Andalusian shirt.

The Deal, As It Stands

The club have confirmed they’ve reached a preliminary agreement to purchase the player’s federative rights, but Mercado won’t officially become a Sevilla player until the transfer is fully completed ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. It’s not a done-and-dusted signing just yet, more of a handshake deal with the paperwork to follow.

The fee hasn’t been officially confirmed by the club, but Ecuadorian media have been reporting a figure in the region of six million euros — not exactly telephone numbers for a player who’s been turning heads across South America.

Who Is Patrik Mercado?

If you haven’t clocked this lad yet, here’s the quick rundown:

  • Age: 22 years old
  • Nationality: Ecuadorian
  • Position: Attacking central midfielder
  • Foot: Right
  • Height: 1.77m
  • 2024-25 stats: 7 goals and 11 assists — tidy numbers for a midfielder
  • Awards: Named best player of the 2025 season and best offensive midfielder at the EL PRO 2025 awards in Ecuador
  • International: Three caps for Ecuador, all in World Cup 2026 qualifying

Ecuador, for what it’s worth, have been drawn in a World Cup group alongside Germany, Curaçao and Ivory Coast — so Mercado could well be playing on the biggest stage of all just as he’s getting settled at Sevilla. Not a bad bit of timing.

The Non-EU Headache

Here’s where it gets a bit complicated, and it’s the sort of thing that’ll keep the Sevilla board up at night. The club currently has all three of their non-EU slots filled — taken up by Alexis Sánchez, Suazo and Marcao. To register Mercado, one of those spots needs to free up.

The most likely candidate to make way? Alexis Sánchez, whose contract expires on 30 June. The Chilean veteran has had a decent enough stint but his deal running out makes the maths fairly straightforward. Marcao is also reportedly someone the club are looking to move on, so there are a couple of routes to making this work.

The Bigger Picture

Sevilla have been in a bit of a rebuild mode, and landing a player who’s just been crowned the best in his entire league — at 22 — suggests some proper scouting work has gone on here. An offensive midfielder with genuine goal contributions isn’t always easy to come by, and at a reported six million euros, this looks like the sort of deal that could age very well.

The wait until summer might test the patience of the Sevilla faithful, but sometimes the best things are worth holding out for. Watch this space.
