Valverde Is Back to His Best — And Arbeloa's Side Can't Get Enough of Him

Federico Valverde has rediscovered his best form in 2026, becoming Arbeloa's most trusted operator in the Real Madrid midfield. Here's why it matters.

Fede Valverde is absolutely flying right now, and if you’ve been watching Real Madrid’s Castilla side closely, you already knew this was coming.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Since the turn of the year, Valverde has been arguably the standout performer in Álvaro Arbeloa’s squad. The stats back it up — 12 assists and two goals for the season, with a frankly ridiculous eight of those assists and both goals coming since January alone. That’s his best-ever return for assists in a single campaign at the club, and the season isn’t done yet.

For context, his most productive spell previously came under Carlo Ancelotti in 2022/23, when the Uruguayan was reinvented as a winger and delivered 12 goals and seven assists. That’s the benchmark he set for himself, and he’s now chasing it down from a completely different position.

Different Role, Same Fede

What makes this current run so interesting is how he’s doing it. Valverde isn’t being asked to bomb forward and rack up numbers as an attacking outlet — Arbeloa wants something more nuanced from him.

He’s become the connective tissue of the side:

  • Organising the press and the shape when things get stretched
  • Covering for teammates — he was even doing it on the left flank against Benfica
  • Translating the manager’s instructions in real time on the pitch
  • Still threatening from distance and arriving late into the box when the moment’s right

It’s the full package, basically. Box-to-box in the truest sense.

Arbeloa’s Extension on the Pitch

Arbeloa has been dead open about how much he rates the lad. Without putting too many words in his mouth, the manager has described Valverde as practically an extension of himself on the pitch — one of the leaders, someone who represents exactly what a Madrid player should be, and crucially, someone who refuses to come off even when he’s carrying a knock.

That last bit tells you everything about his mentality, doesn’t it.

The Trent Connection

One thing that’s quietly become a proper weapon for this Madrid side is the right-side combination between Valverde and Trent Alexander-Arnold. The pair have developed a real understanding, and it’s opening up space that opponents simply aren’t dealing with. When Valverde has the freedom to roam and Trent is dictating from deep, it’s a nightmare to defend against.

Why This Matters

For a while, there were genuine questions about whether Valverde had been slightly misused — shoved into positions that didn’t quite suit him, which dulled his impact. What we’re seeing now is a player who’s been given clarity of role and is absolutely running with it.

He’s not just a squad player doing a job. Right now, Valverde is the engine, the leader, and the bloke the manager trusts most when the game needs sorting out. That’s a big deal at a club like Real Madrid, even at this level.

If he keeps this up, it won’t be long before everyone’s talking about him.
